Cincinnati Bearcats meet the future Bearcats. Their message to may surprise you at 6 @local12
3:22 PM - Aug 1, 2017
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - The Peace Bowl has come a long way since it started 10 years ago.
Even after a murder during one of the youth football team games, the peace bowl came back. Year after year. Now it's gotten
50 teams will be in town this weekend. This is more than just a game.
The Peace Bowl has a home now. 1,200 children from 50 teams across the country will play here this weekend.
The three-day event is sponsored by UC's Public Safety and Athletic Departments,
"These children are our future Bearcats. They wear it on their shirt, but the truth is this is our student pool. Come here, many can see what their life could be like,” said Dr. Robert Engel of UC’s Safety and Reform.
Pastor Peterson Mingo founded the Peace Bowl. Its goal was to break down barriers between neighborhoods.
Living in the inner city can be territorial, but playing football can be a connector.
"Once they get to know each other, understand [they’re] not the enemy, just a young man like you trying to do the same thing,” said Pastor Mingo. “He's your brother.”
Cincinnati Bearcats took time to talk to the “future Bearcats.”
“Every day you get opportunity to try hardest to play for friends, family, the name on your back,” said UC Bearcat Cortez Broughton.
The city based “Trojan Black Football Team” watched the Bearcats work out. The coach's message is about a different kind of exercise
"If you read 30 minutes every night, you'll complete a book a week, 52 books a month, change your lifestyle, you are what you think. If you want to change your life, you have to put information in that helps you think differently,” said Trojan Black Coach Steve Sherman. "We want you to shoot for the stars, there are many stars in the sky but God has only one of you. You're the head, not the tail, the beginning not the end.”
The Peace Bowl is about so much more than football.
The Peace Bowl begins with a cheer showcase on Friday with 360 cheerleaders across the country.
21 games will be played on Saturday and Sunday starting at 9 a.m. in the morning on both days.
